Tempo Labs is a builder for people who care about the app screens themselves.
The easiest way to think about it is: Tempo helps you generate and refine React UI with a more visual workflow than a pure coding agent. It is less “make my entire product exist” and more “help me design and build the interface without losing access to the code.”
For the Start Building job, that puts Tempo in a narrower lane than Lovable, Cursor, or OpenAI Codex. Narrow is not bad. Narrow is only bad when you thought you were buying the whole sandwich and got a very nice slice of bread.
Where it fits
I would consider Tempo when:
- the product is mostly about screens, flows, and React components
- you want visual editing without giving up code ownership
- you already have a backend plan, or you do not need much backend yet
- you care about design systems, Figma handoff, or consistent UI patterns
Tempo is especially interesting when the first problem is “I need this interface to exist and not look like a settings page from 2009.” It can help get React screens moving quickly while still leaving you with code you can edit in a normal workflow.
How I would think about it
The question is not “is Tempo the best full-stack AI app builder?”
The better question is:
Is my biggest early problem the frontend?
If yes, Tempo makes sense. It gives you AI-assisted UI creation, visual editing, and a path back into real code.
If no, start somewhere else. A project that needs auth, payments, database setup, background jobs, or a full app scaffold will usually be better served by Lovable for beginner momentum or by a repo-first agent once the codebase exists.
Where I would be careful
Tempo is frontend-focused. That means you still need a plan for the rest of the product.
If your app needs login, saved data, subscriptions, email capture, or secure backend logic, Tempo is not the whole stack. You may pair it with tools like Supabase, Stripe, or a coding agent. Just do that deliberately instead of discovering the missing backend at 11:47 p.m. while whispering “but the button looks great.”
My quick take
Tempo is worth knowing if your Start Building problem is UI-heavy and React-shaped.
I would not send every beginner here first. I would send design-minded builders here when they want a visual front-end workflow, editable code, and a cleaner bridge between screen ideas and actual React.
